If you wander through Venice, shady corners conceal either a small trattoria, a crowded swaying gondola on the canals or a stone lion. If you look up to the sky at St. Mark's Square, you will recognize Venice's landmark, the Lion of St. Mark. If you move away from the crowds of tourists and reach the Arsenal, you will see the Lion of Piraeus, which has been sitting around for over 2000 years. The most picturesque lion, however, sits to the right of the entrance. The Lion of Hepaiostos, as he is called, was also once in Piraeus as a signpost for the road to the Greek port. His facial expression impressed me, and the evening mood of the light gave him a venerable aura.
