Burano is actually made up of five islands - San Mauro, Giudecca, San Martino, Sinistra, San Martino Destra and Terranova - and tells the story of once flourishing fishing islands that were also known for their viticulture. But the real jewel of these islands are the talented lace embroiderers, whose craftsmanship is of exceptional quality. These masterpieces and other handicrafts are hidden in the small, colorfully painted houses, which look like a living painting, and not behind the glass walls of a dazzling shopping boutique.
